Today, it was about Personal Reflection.
The notion of "Personal Pleasure". It is difficult for a person to rid themselves of the desire for Personal Pleasure and potentially tougher to differentiate between where the line is drawn. Even harder to honestly follow through with denying himself and following Jesus.
So today - we take it to the Garden of Gethsemane - the main recorded time when Jesus prayed for a potential way out of the crucifixation and pain that was to come.
Interesting point of note is before the Garden of Gethsemane came the "Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial" story where Jesus noted the Bible phrase
"I will strike the shepherd
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered."
It's noted that Jesus was overwhelmed and sorrowful to the point where Jesus prayed
"My Father if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.
Yet not as I will, but as you will."
But interestingly, we should also consider it from the angle of Jesus not being afraid of Death and the Pain but rather sorrowful may be because of the pain it will deliver to his Disciples.
Jesus prayed it three times and through it did not complain to God - but rather made his petition but acknowledged that his Father's will - God's will was perfect and the plan.
Mark reported the prayer as
"Abba Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will but what you will."
Luke made an interesting account where --
An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. BUT NOTE that the Angel strengthening him did not remove his anguish. Because the next sentence said "And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly".
So by Jesus' example --
It's okay to be sorrowful and anguished about the trials of life. If Jesus faced this anguish, even though we aren't being physically crucified like Jesus, we still follow Jesus' example.
But now we go back to the topic at hand - Personal Pleasure. These are things that usually seem good to a Man but end in Death.
This may be one of the only circumstances where we see Jesus personal pleasure (being with his disciples) showed through -- as he did pray for the cup to be taken from him. It was a petition and a will of his.
But note that Jesus surrendered his Personal Pleasure to God (or the way that "seemed good to Man"). And God strengthened him.
But as of right now -- when we feel sorrow in our trials. We ca have faith that we can pray to God and ask him. The answer may not be an immediate Yes. But we can use this to remember that God is always with us.
